Here is what you really need to worry about. first of all you should buy a used car. regardless of who is paying for it a used car is an eperience for every teenager. another thing you should know is about insurance. Major impacts on insurance are number of doors, size of engine, brand, classification (sport, etc.) Ironically the most expenisve part of a car is paying for gas insurance and upkeep/maintenance. I would recommend a small, four cylinder, four door car for the cheapest gas and insurance.

Toyota: Corolla, Camry. Honda: accord, fit, civic. Nissan; altima, sentra, maxima. Pontiac: Vibe, G5, G6, grand prix. Chevy: Malibu, cobalt, aveo. I and my friends have had too many problems with ford and dodges to reccomend any but my personal favorite is the grand prix. Mazda 3, 6. the mitsubishi evo is fun, and the new one loks great, but it may be more expensive because of its sporty nature

Insurance depends on themodel and year of the car that you buy. It can vary a lot. I recommend you go thru an insurance broker who handles several different companies rather than an agent who only works with one company.

You should shop around and just get the best car you can afford. Anyone who offers advice on handling money always says that it's a big waste of money to get a brand new car. It's much better to get a car at least 1-2 years old. Brand new cars loose a lot of their value as soon as you drive them off the lot, an older car won't.

When at the car dealerships never let them know that you really like a car. Never fall in love with a car, you have to always be willing to walk away if they won't give you a good deal. I'm not very good at haggling over the price but the last time we bought a car at a lot I found a way to play the dealerships against each other.

First I narrowed my search down to two cars, each at competitive dealerships. Then I took my second choice for a test drive alone, I drove it to the other car lot to compare it to my first choice. When they found out that I was on a test drive with the other car and told them how much I really loved it (I didn't tell them it was my 2nd choice) they dropped the price of the one they had that I was looking at significantly. I ended up getting my first choice car for a much better deal than they were originally offering.

If you buy an oldish Corolla, they are cheap on gas, but to get an insurance price on any car here's some from my bookmarks

http://gsx1.com/InsuranceComparison.html

you can back up input another car, get new price quote.

Here's more

http://gsx1.com/Car-Insurance/100.php

there's more in google, don't get insurance from the first few, see as many as you can, that's the best way to find the cheapest quote, good luck.

Are you paying for it...or are your parents?

Personally I think the first car should be something very inexspensive so you can learn the resposibility of ownership and be less likely to try and hop it up.

get a small honda or toyota, they have good mileage and they can last longer than American-made cars. i don't know about insurance, they vary depending on which company you use.
