I'm on the market for a new car and instead of just buying one, I want to buy something and build it up. I know that Evo's and Supra's are everyone's number one choice in upgrading cars and tuning them up, but I was looking to be a bit different and shy away from the easily modded cars.
Any thoughts on cars you can put some good money into and get something fast back?

If you looking for a cheap car to mod, get something that is JDM, but don't get a honda civic cuz then you'll be called a ricer a lot. I own a 1993 nissan 240sx hatchback at the time, and love it. I bought it for around 2.5 grand with hella miles and not clean. I brought it home and started working on it, I first started on the engine. I swapped the engine with the 2JZGTE which is the engine in the toyota supra. After that I upgraded the turbo, fuel injectors, and other small parts around the engine bay. I took it to the dyno to tune it first then to the track, the car drifted nice and was really fun to drive I had around 330hp at that time. The only thing the car was missing was cool exterior looks, I started with repairing some dents, and stripping the paint. I took it in the paint shop and painted it a nice dark metallic black, she was a beauty. I put a spoiler on, rims, an exhaust, and some stickers. At the end I had spent under 10 grand total with the car and build. By the way don't forget brakes bracing and safety equipment, and also some nice seats, I currently have a pair of sparco's sitting in my beast. She is now putting out a little over 350hp and is still streetable.

Easily upgraded? 1968-1972 Nova. Or imagine how cool a 1970-73 vega wagon with an ls1 would be.

A Honda S2000, Eagle Talon (basically a Mitsubishi Eclipse) and VW GTi are some tunable cars that you don't see all the time. Those are fast stock and they still have vast aftermarket support. My vote is on the Honda S2000

Honda Civic. There are all kinds of tuner parts for Civic's. Of course a Ford Mustang 5.0 is a great car with all kinds of potential.

Camaro or saab. 99 camaro with the ls1 engine, put a bigger cam in it= 400+ hp. Saabs are all turboed and have very strong engines.
