Whatever you choose, before you commit to buy it, check with an insurance agent for the likely premiums.

Anything even slightly sporty will cost you dearly and 350Z or Mustangs etc are gonna hit you in the pocket book.

The Tiburon doesn't really belong in that list.

As a general rule of thumb, your automotive expenses should not be more than 25-30% of your gross income, so $1000/mo should cover the payment, gas and insurance. That being said, you should be able to afford any of those cars assuming you don't have a bunch of other debt...if you do, you probably don't need to be buying such an expensive car.

All things being close to equal, I would take the G35 over the 350z any day of the week. If you think you're too young, go to an import accessories shop and get SKYLINE lettering and take off the Infiniti stuff. Considering the Skyline is the aspirational vehicle of young people, why would the G35 (Actually it's the G37 now) NOT be good for your image?

Anyway, for that money you should check out the WRX as has been mentioned. I can't say much for the interior, especially the plastics, but it's a solid performer and isn't terrible on gas. I know it's not a coupe, but if you have never driven one you should go take a test drive.

I'm not a huge fan of FWD cars, but if you're considering a Tiburon you should look at the GTI. VW is having a hard time selling the 2-door. There's deals to be had on them and unlike the Tiburon, it will be worth something when you've outgrown it.

Hybrid. It gets great gas mileage. Its not to pricey. I think its fuel efficient and its looks good

You, unfortunately, are looking for a car that is powerful, gets excellent gas mileage, doesn't cost a lot and is a nice looking ride - in other words, a car that does everything.

Somewhere among your desires, you're going to have to compromise somewhat. You'll have to decide which attributes are most important to you and buy accordingly.

The Tiburon is not in the same class as those other cars. It's more like a competitor for the Civic SI or Mazdaspeed 3 or VW GTI.

The RX-8 is also more finicky about maintenance than the other cars (which you should be properly maintaining anyway). That's a car you only get if you think its unique characteristics are worth the responsibility.

If you can't afford a 350Z, you can't afford a G35 coupe.

The Tiburon, particularly late-model, would be an okay choice. You might also consider its relative, the Elantra. (Not as fast as the Tiburon V6, but it's a pretty good-handling car)

Also consider:

Honda Civic SI/RSX/Integra

Honda Prelude/Accord V6

Toyota Celica

Toyota MR-2

Mazda Miata

Mazda Protege 5/Protege MP3

Subaru Impreza 2.5RS (the WRX might kill you on insurance)

Subaru Forester XT (WRX performance with cheaper insurance)

If you're interested in a bit more torque, and you'd be okay with fuel economy no better (or worse) than the 350Z, you might look into a mid-90s Ford Thunderbird, Mercury Cougar (or if you want more expensive maintenance, and to use premium gas) Lincoln Mark VIII. They're heavy (3700 lbs), but they have V8 torque and fairly responsive (for their size) but very forgiving handling. And the price and insurance is cheap. Or a Mustang or Camaro/Firebird, of course. (Getting a V6 Camaro is okay, getting a V6 Mustang is not, unless it's 05 or later, BTW...but you should only get V8)

The best price/performance/efficiency will be a used Miata or MR-2. (The Miata is far more practical, though...you might think "in that kind of car, who cares about cargo room?" but TRUST ME YOU WILL, especially if it's your only car.)

What a list of lousy cars. You only make 50 k a year. Poor thing How will you survive. If you make that much the price of gas should not be a problem.

350z is a great car that I recommend. However, whatever car that you choose, make sure that it is not only sleek, but can fit within your pocket book as well, as it is pointless to get bad credit just to have a nice car.

Go with the Tiburon. It's a choice that won't put you in the poor house. Not only that, but it's a good little sports car. With the V6 engine it's peppy enough, but still good on gas (compared to your other choices). It's got a well-balanced chassis, that makes it a fun2drive car. Look on YouTube for Top Gear episode where they test drive it. They have nothing but good things to say about it.

Have you ever actually driven a Tiburon? You really should give it a chance. It really is a nice car for the money. Honda Civic Si is good on gas, and has 200 hp. Too bad it looks just like a regular Civic with a few add-ons. Don't overlook the Ford Mustang. It's got a unique style, plenty of power, and a reasonable price. A v6 will get you about 25 mpg, the v8 a little less but still not bad if you don't drive it hard. A Honda Accord EX coupe with a v6 would be good. The styling is fairly conservative, but it is quick, reliable, efficient, and a more "mature" than a civic. As for the guy who recommended a Pontiac Grand Am, almost anything would be better, except maybe a Daewoo.

I would not recommend buying the 350Z in general. It is loaded in plastic and known as a mid-life crisis car. The Tiburon is not a popular car for a reason. It does not excel in any category other than a good warranty. A car that I would recommend is a Honda Accord Coupe. Personally, I think the new Accord is ugly in sedan form, but the coupe is a whole other story. It actually looks cool, from a side profile, it looks like a BMW. Other than that, the only good other option is a Nissan Altima Coupe. The Accord was rated better than this, but if the Accord Styling doesn't fit you, this would be a nice choice. To save a little bit of money, the Scion TC is a nice car, not much fun to drive though.

Not many other companies have tested this market of relatively inexpensive coupes. Your options are limited. If you are willing to expand your options, a Mini Cooper S would be an amazing choice. The Mini is like a Supercharged Go-Cart. It can fit in just about every parking spot, it is fast, extremely agile, and can manage up to 35MPG. Also, when you drive one, people in other Mini's wave to you. Its kind of like a clan.

Good Luck

PS- What did you do to get so many answers? When ask a question in buying and selling I am lucky if I get 10.

A Hybrid car is the best way to go to save money in the long run, but I don't of any that are sporty and or attractive.

I'm not sure what year of a car you're looking for? They made a Dodge Stratus (Two Door) a few years back that really looks sporty and sharp...it looks very fast, but only has a 4 banger in it wich would benifit your money you spend in gas. Also with Dodge Stratus having a 4 banger for an engine you save on insurance, you get a 2 door sporty looking car with all the sporty looks yet pay less because of the engine size ...the smaller motor qualify's the car as a NON sports car though you still have those nice looks.

I have also been car shopping myself right now and would have bought a Dodge Stratus but I already owned one at one point and smashed it, just want something different so I've been looking at the newer Volvo's....most are 4 doors but they have the sporty feel to them....less cheap feel....I like the quality! Ford also owns part of Volo now so your parts would'nt be as much as it normally would have been buying a forgien car. The Gas milage in a Volo's not bad eaither and even though their mostly 4 doors their still sharp looking.

Remeber when buying a car if you buy new rims for your car it totally changes the look of your car. It's like you after a new hair-cut.

Good rule of thumb - don't own a car that's worth more than 1/2 your yearly salary. & Don't be afraid to buy used.

I would reccomend buy at least 2 yrs old - you can get a way better car.

Fast and good on gas...not easy to find. A 4 cylinder with tubo is a good compormise in those 2 areas.

Some new options -

Altima Coupe.

Jetta Wolfsburg

VW GTI

Hyundai Tiburon

Some used options - there are a lot more

Audi A4

Audi S4

Audi A3

Jetta

Jetta GTI

Hyundai tiburon

Mazda Rx-8

350Z

ALtima Coupe

MItsubishi Eclipse GT

Infiniti I250

Acura TSX

From my list:

Cheapest New - Tiburon

Cheapest Used - TIburon

2nd cheapest new - JEtta or ALtima

Coolest new in proce range - VW GTI

Coolest Used in price range - Audi S4 or Audi A4

What i would do - get a several yr old A4 or GTI.

Or if you want to be way different used RX-8 -a rotary engine is way different....

just for the record, 350Z is faster than G35. i really thought about getting a 350Z. but i got a G35 sports coupe instead. it was a better choice. mostly due to the fact that G35 is a bit more luxury rather sports, it has 4 seats, and girls just DIGGGGGGG it. its fast too. it wont beat a stang in sraight line (i tried so hard...) but i think it'll corner better. and fuel is actually on the good side. i get like 22 mpg. my friend who had an rx8 said he got 18 mpg. and just for the record, rx8 and G35 are about the same speed. (on a FLAT surface).

even though rx8 got no torque, and the rotary only pushes 230-240 horse, its curve weight 2400lb makes it up for it. but when it comes on rougher rode, or up the mountain, it lags behind.. BAD. and the engine wont give u anything unless u pushing 8000 RPM+ .

and im sure u can afford a G35. u should get a used one first. and maybe in couple of years, get a G37. and trust me, u r never too young. im 16 and i drive G35 sports coupe. its a killer. people will call u spoiled and i rly dont care...

but, these cars are also for looks. (to pick girls up duh..)

if u want performance straight up, get a Evo or a imprezza STi. (used 2000-2004 cost about 20K. horrible interior if u ask me.) they r stunning fast though. easily whip a 350Z. dont be looking for a new evo... u r going have to go empty stomach for a whole year.

2008-04-19 05:56:08 UTC
Have you considered a slightly used car? You can get a car that's 1-2 years old with 20K miles or less for substantially less. than new. 20K miles on a new car is practically nothing as most cars will do 100k easily, and someone else took the big initial hit on the price. That way you can get a car that maybe you couldn't afford new. So if your limit is $20k to spend, you can get a car that was between $25-30K new. It's a good way to go to the next level of cars without committing your self to a car you couldn't really afford.

PS. Tiburon is nowhere near the same league as the others you mentioned.

if i were to choise any of the above , i would go with the rx-8 . it may be kinda bad on gas but the most practicle of those sports cars . stay away from the tiberon ,it is not fast and not built well . personally i would check out the scion tc , but with a 5 speed . it is quick , not the quickest thing out there but not slow by any means . also gets good gas mileage and is inexpensive . one suggestion if you do , take the tire wear warranty if they offer it . it does go through a little quick

Get a Honda /Acura! Solidly built, bulletproof engine (swiss watch precision), reasonable pricing and great value retention when it comes to sell it on. Parts & servicing reasonable. Plenty of go faster parts / tuners as well. Sips fuel ( comparatively), and safety is top notch. The latest JDM Type-R Civic laps Nurburgring faster than the old NSX Type-R! All that and not a turbo in sight!

maybe a new subaru WRX sti there so so on gas very quick and all wheel drive.

the new lancers are about as fast as the subaru's maybe a lil better gas MPG.

and the new chevy cobalt SS i know most ppl laugh at it, but the new turbocharged cobalts are runnin 265 HP stock have a new suspension system than the older models, and if ur thinking there supercharged there not. they were but they had to change to a turbocharger to meet emmision standards and the chevy cobalts SS get pretty good gas MPG i think its something like 21/28 take a few give a few

1984-1989 300zx turbo. Great looking car, great gas milage..my 85 gets 30-45 mpg. Very advanced electronics for it's age..the GLL model that is. 3200lbs. 0-60 5.4 sec stock. Very hard to blow the motor, type vg30et into the search and you will be happy to read that it was the fastest production car out of japan in 85. The 87 model is more aerodynamic than the 85-86. the 84 is the annevassary model which is also more aerodynamic. You can go drifting with these cars. I swear by this car. Oh, and expect it to last you around 500,000 miles no problem. Stock internals can handle 500rwhp. I added a manual boost controller and an intake and get 249.8rwhp 332ftlb of torque with the above mentioned gas mileage. The avg price for the car is now 3k. I hope this helpes you alot! My e-mail is lovesdaoc1@yahoo if you have any questions. The links are for the engine and the youtube link is for all of the comercials. Enjoy.

Look at a used corvette for about 40k if you can. They're good on gas, and bear anything you have mentioned. However, if you are on a more limited-budget, look at a Mazda MX-5 Miata. They are very good on gas, and although they don't have gobs of power, they are quick due to their small size, and low weight. A nissan 350Z would however be a nice compromise between the two.

P.S. If you're looking at a sports car, a bit of a "gas guzzler" comes with the territory. Make sure you can afford it before you buy it.

Go to Consumer Reports.com and research whatever you buy. They have consumer opinions as well as reviews and in depth ratings on vehicles. It includes safety ratings, fuel efficiency, ownership costs, how it compares to similar cars, etc. You might also try edmunds.com which has similar things. Before purchasing my car, I researched the hell out of all of this and was very satisified with my decision.

I have a mustang, which I think is a very hot car and they are FAST. I've had an 8 cylinder 5.0 years ago before gas went up so high and now I have a 6 cylinder. It still has great pickup and is very fast and amazingly good on gas. The price on these cars is relatively low if you steer clear of the newest models. I have a 2003, which I think is one of their best years.......no trouble mechanically and it turns heads! I got mine for $11,900 and my payments are around $250. Good luck
