Also look for small engines (displacement and number of cylinders).
Hybrid design if you can afford it. You're just spending your money on the drive-train instead of gasoline. Maybe not a bad trade?
Manual transmissions are a little more efficient.
Small diesel engines are very efficient if you don't mind looking for the fuel sometimes.
Avoid:
Vans, SUV's, Pick-up's, 4wd anything, boxy body styles, cars meant to go fast and vehicles with gas-guzzler taxes!!!

Small cars do the best. The best overall are the hybrids like the Honda Insight. The Geo Metro also did well, but I think that car is discontinued. Other hybrids are the Toyota Prius and Honda Civic.
