I have a signed contract to purcase a new car. The deal was made on 12/17. I now find that I can realize tax benefits if I delay closing until after Jan 1st. Do I have the option to do this, and how can I propose this to the dealer? I am willing and able to make payment immediately, but I would like the sale to be completed on or after Jan 2nd 2006.

This might be tough, as the dealer is trying to close its accounting books with as much revenue as possible before the end of the year. So you and the dealer have conflicting interests.

What might help is if you figure out how much the tax benefit is and weigh that against the savings of your deal. Is it worth waiting? If so, then propose to the dealer that you'll go back to them in 2006 for the purchase if they can give you the same price. If not, you can always go to another dealer.

Good luck.
