Which diesels simply get the best mpg? I'm a dodge guy, but they may not the get the best mpg. I'm also talking older diesels, not the 2012 models.

the Volkswagen diesels are quite efficient but they're like not even diesels, they rev real high and don't make the nice roar of a diesel. They run extremely quiet and smooth, which can be a good thing but not if you're a typical truck guy.
Honestly I'd rather have a big powerful, turbo diesel that roars down the road at 7/8/9 mpg than a tiny engine that I can barely hear or feel.
The twin turbo 7.3 powerstroke is a pretty awesome diesel but gets about 9 mpg.
2 stroke diesels are very fuel to power efficient but not as much power to weight.

You'll be looking at a diesel Volkswagen Jetta or Audi A3 if you want something old. The E46 BMW 3 series cars and Mercedes C class diesel cars are good too but I would personally get a Chevrolet Cruze diesel but it's newer so it isn't part of your options.
If you want a truck Dodge made good diesel ones. The 1996-2004 2500 and 3500 Rams are noted for their good reliability, however the cars have better mpg

Dodge buys most diesels from a DIESEL MAKER The VW/AUDI an BMW an BENZ diesels ae EXCELLENT and the new CRUZE TURBO DIESEL features a BMW engine under the hood I am told!

Volkswagen's TDi is the king in this category, or even the non direct injection ones.
