I want to buy a car and I need some advice as to which one will fit the bill?

Question

I need a small family car, whch will need to take one adult, 3 children (one who is tall, the others still in car seats) plus room for weekly shopping and pushchair.

This is a second car as I already have a company car to use during the week and can use at the weekends.

So, I need something for my partner and kids, which is reliable, fairly spacious; economical and not costing a fortune. I don't want a new car; second hand will do, and I have a budget of around £4,000 (providing the credit comes through....)

NB No Ford Fiestas or anything by Vauxhall, please; five times bitten, six times shy....!

Being a Sunday afternoon, after a splendid lunch, my freind has a decent Rolls-Royce Silver Shadow Mk. 2.

Daft I know, but at £4500 - what a thought.

It's Gold in paintwork, with white leather interior, and although being a tad old, in fine condition.

What a thing to have ! Petrol is a bit much though, I've driven it around looking for the next filling station.

No, probably not practical, unless you feel brave about an excellent car.

you need either a volvo estate, or a merc. (dont shudder) i bought my volvo 4 years ago off ebay, and i paid 300 quid for it, i spent just over 600 quid (new exhaust tyres diesel distributor pump) and last two mots cost me one wiper blade, and one blown bulb... it does 40mpg and is a 12 for the insurance. oh, and its already 19 years old but has only got 154ooo on it. (ive see them with over 300ooo)



the 2.3 850 is phenomenal. 45mpg on petrol, with 225 horsepower.. the 2.5 is 250 horsepower and its limiter kicks in a 155... in an estate car. the second safest car in teh world..saab being No1.



dont bother with the V70, is a dire example of volvo engineering. its chassis isnt upto the horsepower from the big engines...



and teh 2.3 is plods favourite for high speed persuit on motorways... and yes, the chassis and brakes can cope with 150mph..its a volvo.



they may be boxy, squareish and percieved as boring..but with a 0-60 time of around 10 seconds, (which isnt bad for a 2 ton estate car) and id ratther own a 20 year old volvo than a 10 year old ford, vauxhall, fiat, peugeot, etc

Amen to the bites by Fords and Vauxhalls... I have driven toyotas for years. They are usually quite dependable, starting in below freezing weather with no problem, nor are they swayed by rain, or other nasties.

A certified used will help also, if you can find one.

My mate has a '93 Toyota with 186,000 miles on it, it has had very little work and passes inspections with no problems. I have known others to drive theirs up to 350,000 miles with little problems as well. They seem really built to last.

a vw golf or audi a3 great build and reliability you cant go wrong even high milage models,look at skoda built by vw now only the badge is different

honda civic 2002 model onwards



loads space...reliable..cheap to run..i get 330m per tank 1.6 model....should be able to get one for just over £4k

maybe a vw jetta - the newer ones are big and priuces have come down. (and i own one)
