Question:
Mercedes Benz, BMW, Lexus or infiniti?
2013-11-18 00:30:43 UTC
I am 31 years old male single in school. I want to buy an enjoyable daily driving car. I like German cars but not sure for daily driving experience and feel, handling for snow driving, and more importantly the reliability, appearance and attractiveness (since I am still single wanna improve my possibilities) :-) and in the end the “resale value” in case I want to change the car in a year or two. So I am putting some other reliable cars I guess from Lexus and Infiniti on my list.

-2014 Lexus IS 350 F sport AWD (Loved the car size, and how aggressive it looks)
-2014 infiniti Q50 Sport AWD (Loved the front, but don't like the rear end though)
-2014 Lexus GS 350 F Sport AWD (Love and hate, don't know why)
-2014 Mercedes Benz E350 4matic (AMG package)
-2014 BMW 535 Xdrive (M package)
-2014 BMW 335 Xdrive (M package)

Also, may consider as well the new 2014 BMW 435 Xdrive (the new replacement of the current 3 series coupe)

Thank you

If you're a student, why would you buy a brand new luxury vehicle? Unless you're buying it outright ( but I don't know many students that can afford to do that ), you will saddle yourself with debt during a period in your life when it will be more difficult to pay it back.

As for resale value 1 or 2 years down the road, it doesn't matter which vehicle you're looking at. Deprecation value on ANY brand new vehicle is the steepest during the first 3 years of ownership. A luxury car is even worse.

Do not under any circumstances buy new off the lot. Even on a couple of years old will give you better value. You'll lose so much just driving it off the lot, it's ridiculous. Better to find an old one that still runs, and use what you would be spending on payments to fix it up and maybe hot rod it a bit.

Forget the lexus and infiniti, you might as well by a honda or toyota. BMW? well, maybe. Mercedes? Depends on what you can find, you surely don't want or can afford a new one. Some of the mature Mercedes are good values and will last a very long time. I've heard of some getting more than a million miles on the engine without major repairs. Some parts, like alternators, brakes, belts, hoses, and shocks will wear out of course, they have to. All in all, I'd go with a good used Mercedes, actually the older the better so long as the condition is good. If you really want to have fun driving a cedes, look for an old but still good Cosworth model. Either the 2.3 liter or 2.5 will do. They're fast, nimble, and ride like a sports car with the looks, and room of a mercedes.

I just bought the 2012 Infiniti M35h a couple months ago. I know it wasn't on your list but I thought I could offer some advice based on my experience in the last 4 months of ownership.

The Infiniti is breathtaking in the cabin, I would choose its luxury and quality over any other brands. The Q50 is similar regarding interior but has a more aggressive sporty look to it on the exterior which I really like so there's that.

I feel like I get the best of both worlds with the Infiniti because its a hybrid so its efficient on gas while being extremely fast. I don't know how they managed but Infiniti has made the fastest production Hybrid in the world with 361hp so they take the cake on engineering in my opinion.

Infiniti has since renamed the 2014 version of my car the Q70 but it is still the same nonetheless. It retails for roughly 60k, I purchased mine used with seriously low miles for only 38k so I was happy about that and I think that should explain what another person already has , which is, all of these luxury cars depreciate FAST so if you're not too opposed to it buy 1-2 years used (Also cheaper in taxes) plus not many people can tell the difference as long as you're still in the same year-frame in terms of the body style.

And lastly I must be honest, I previously had a Lexus, loved it no complaints but don't believe the hype of "buy Japanese and you'll save on parts and maintenance." Rock hit the windshield and dealer wanted $1100+ for a new OEM one, which is crazy because my sister got a windshield from the dealer and IMPORTED FROM GERMANY for less than $500. Same goes for Infiniti, my first service (30k miles) cost me over $850 so buy what you prefer not basing it on the cost of maintenance or parts. Luxury is expensive, case closed.

well that's my two cents so (stay away from BMW) & GOOD LUCK!

Definitely wait a year for a car!!!. There is absolutely no reason to buy a BRAND NEW CAR EVER, unless you are buying an r8, lambo, ferrari, and even those you can wait. Buy it with 5000 or more because a car will lose 30% or more of its value as soon as you buy it.

1. Never been to keen on infinitis. Infinity is too round. Too many shapes. No concrete sharp lines. Not sporty-looking enough. Unless you get a coupe, I feel the new infinitis are the new "older people" car like Lexus used to be.

2. Lexus is no longer an "old people car. "GS f sport man that car, unbelievable looks, beats the rest very comfortable and fast. The new face Lexus blew my mind. People say they are ugly and i tell them, you must be jealous or out of your damn mind. That front, the whole F style and the maroon interior is gorgeous. Not to forget how comfortable smooth and quiet Lexus are, and the F sport is fast. If you're going to go with Lexus, then go with the GS over IS, more room, and looks better. DEFINITELY go with GS if you are willing.

3. BMWs are sporty but not as comfortable, not the BMW that used to be. BMW is not as comfortable and the 5 series looks like a boat nowadays. If you are going to go with BMW then why don you buy an older M3. Nothing says business 30s single than a m3. Why in your right mind would you spend 50k+ on a new BMW BS M package that looks like SH!T when you can buy 2009+ actual M3 with 20k miles or less for 40k+.

4. Mercedes, very comfortable yet quality in interior is, again, not what Mercedes used to be. I like the e-class but not CRAZY about it. I find Mercedes boring nowadays. Mercedes hasn't really changed lately. It looks nice but i feel like its the same damn thing, although that's what Mercedes wants.

Bottom line. if you want the best NEW looking, most dramatically changed car and don't want to wait, go for the GS because it looks new, it looks like it changed. If you are wiling to go for a car a few years older, than go with M3, S4, AMG. If you're going to drop 50k, dont drop it on what EVERYBODY ELSE IS DRIVING.

I just recently bought a new car. I was looking at a few of the same cars as you.

I think German cars are gorgeous and well built, however, are you buying or leasing? My motto is you lease German and buy Japanese. Infiniti is now the Q50 and heard they are having some issues with the new electronics. Funny how I loved the front grill of the Infiniti but thought the same about the rear.

You basically answered your own question seems like you like the Lexus IS but if you are leasing get a BMW. I own an Acura and my Boyfriend owns a BMW. Trust me, the reliability and cost to maintain is not even comparable. If you have the money though...go for it.

Go and test drive each car on your list, point out pluses and minuses, do the math and make a choice. Nobody can tell you what YOU will like, because we don't know your feelings to each vehicle. Go with your feelings and be money-wise. I fell in love with 2014 GS 350 F Sport RWD for it's technology package, dynamic suspension, sporty feel, new Direct Shift 8-sp transmission, exhaust sound, huge screen, fuel economy (21/29), etc, etc... Just drive and choose.

I know you didn't list the infiniti g37, but that has been my dream car for a while now. I think you should add it to your list of cars to consider for the following reason. It is still a pretty sporty car considering it carries the same engine as the 370z and can be very fun to drive for a single guy. Now if you meet a woman down the road and get serious, it will still appear to be a classy car that you can take her to dates in. Idk, just something else to consider. I would recommend purchasing one just a few years older for the money you can save, but I'd you are set on buying new, I believe they changed the name to the Q40.

Infiniti Q50 has the most ponies under the hood. 335i is a comparable option. But a fully loaded Q50 will run you few grand less than a fully loaded 335i.

Best performance and luxury for the buck? Fully loaded Infiniti G37. Brand new one will run you around 40k

I'd go Lexus GS350 if it were me, after driving that thing man it blew my mind, I've owned lexus and it's been an extremely reliable car, my old GS is just about to turn 200k with no major problems, so I may be a bit biased, but I love the interior of the new GS
