I recently purchased a moped off craigslist and found out the next day that it had been stolen three times. The guy I bought it from gave me a piece of paper with his name and phone number on it as well as his signature but he said he didnt have the original bill of sale. I've never bought a moped before and didnt think anything of it. I got pulled over on it and the police officer (luckily i knew him) told me that I could be in a lot of trouble for not having a bill of sale. If he hadn't known me that well I could have gone down for theft. Can I press charges on the guy I bought it from for not telling me that it had been stolen? And what should I do?

I think you could file a police report and the DA will decide if they will pursue criminal charges. Hopefully you gave him a check and not cash for the moped. I think you could sue him in small claims court to get your money back. Did he give you a signed title? How were you going to get plates?

You need to contact your local police. By law if you bought something stolen you can be charged with a crime! Seriously! So contact the police and turn over the moped. Tell them all the info you have about who sold it to you.

Sadly you are out the money you spent. If you dont report this then if the police ever find you with that stolen moped you will be charged with theft or receiving stolen goods.

A. in case you particularly are dedicated to being grubby and opportunistic, then a minimum of this decision probable won't blow up on your face catastrophically. B. this could nicely be a especially reliable thank you to get your self murdered. the probabilities that he will merely bend over on your risk are especially damn narrow. you will finally end up in warm water. And in case you rather did escape with it and make off with all the aspects, you may then be legally on the hook for that motorbike theft. you would be in possession of stolen sources, and that's particularly all that concerns to the law enforcement officers. C. you may checklist it to the police, in spite of the undeniable fact that it rather is in contrast to they are gonna set up a sting that exact same afternoon. With in trouble-free terms a suspicion to bypass on, it rather is not any longer worth devoting their components to the case. they could haven't any grounds to arrest him prompt besides. The coincident information superhighway classified ads are a a methods cry from sufficient evidence to arrest somebody. To press costs, they could could desire to tournament the numbers of the aspects with the motorbike, which might take it slow, and could contain acquiring those aspects as area of an study. Frankly, police get maximum of theft comments that they do no longer care sufficient to bypass by that a lot difficulty. whilst something is stolen, it rather is seen long previous except it turns up by employing itself. Police do especially much no longer something for theft situations, no longer to indicate set up an entire study into one singular incident based in trouble-free terms on extraordinarily circumstantial evidence. How approximately you merely purchase a motorbike that: a million) Is already intact and dealing (saves you time and labour) 2) would not positioned you into touch with criminals 3) would not carry any potential liabilities on the subject of theft, alongside with possession of stolen sources on *you* in case you purchase those aspects.

I don't think you can do anything, there is no proof of purchase on Craigslist.
