I need to know if there is somewhere I can go to get a free history report on a car I am possibly going to buy. I have the vin number and when I try to put it in to what they say is free then they try to charge to actually get the report. If anyone can help me with this info please please please it would greatly be appreciated and ten points if you are in to that.

If you are buying this car from a dealer then they can provide a carfax report for you, if it is from a private seller then you'll have to pay for it.

There are sites offering free carfax reports but you cannot download or view the report

It's kinda misleading. Although it's true that you can check your car's VIN for free but

if you need to view it, you will need to pay for it. So far, the only legit site that's

really free was nicb.org. It's not as detailed as Carfax though.

If you need a complete and detailed report, you can get a cheap, only $4.99 here

Carfax is the most popular and also the most expensive, that's why I prefer NMVTIS.

It costs $5 but the information is just as good.

If you are looking for the history of a specific vehicle - than there are no free sites. Nobody is going to collect all that data - 20,000 sources I saw in a press release, pay for all the computers to run the site and all the employees to run the computers - and give it away for free.

Sellers can buy a vehicle history report and share it with you!

On cars.com, on AutoTrader.com and on many other sites you will find dealers who have run Carfax reports are providing thousands of reports "free to you." Many dealers also provide these on their own web sites.

Also you can visit carfax.com and look under Find a Car and they show the reports that dealers have already paid for.
