I'm planning on buying a used car, possibly from a private party. I want to cover myself, so I'm thinking that it would be good to have some template that says something like "This person...is selling this car...in as is condition...for this amount of money, etc. I intend to have...

The absolutely free reverse vin check sites generally provide fake information. To get real information, money will have to be paid. The free searches provide fake information so they can get your email address to send spam.

Stay away from shady reverse vin check sites, most likely you won't get any information after you make the payment. Not to mention you won't get a report and you won't get an answer if you try to call for a refund. Stick with a reputable reverse vin check site like http://www.reversevincheck.net that has been around since 1995.

Good idea to notarize bill of sale and make sure selling person sign also certificate of ownership to you so you can register car with no problems from dept of vehicles. Good luck with your new ride.

Look close and you can duplicate this. To notarize is NOT usually necessary unless you feel that the person is not trustworthy.

Always run the VIN through CARFAX.com and check for 1. Legal ownership and accidents (salvage title). If the seller does not give you the VIN then they are probably crooks. It happened to me and because I did my homework I did not get hurt. Got a great little VW for my daughter and couldn't be happier. Pay for the VIN check.

Dont make things complicated. I've done it on a napkin in a bar once..lol. Its still legally binding if ya write it on toilet paper.
