I have an automatic 97 kia sephia, which i hate. I really want to buy a stick shift. I can drive one pretty well, and I heard that they get better gas mileage than automatics. Is this true? Any recommendations on a cheap used car with a manual trans.?

A manual is only a little better on gas. Maybe 1 or 2 miles per gallon. If you have ever been in a traffic jam with a manual you will wish you had an automatic. If you have worked all day and you are tired an manual it terrible. I have driven a truck with a stick since 1998 and I can tell you that I will be buying a car with an automatic for my next vehicle.

Manuals are easy to drive, its second nature once you get used to it. They are in no way tiresome, you are just moving your leg and arm not bench pressing. They can be easier to drive in winter if you know what you are doing but can also be very hazardous if you arent carefully and hit a wrong gear. You can start off in 2nd and your gear multiplication wont be as great so you have less of a chance of spinning your tires. Manual trannies tend to last alot longer and when something does go wrong its usually only the clutch. Manuals can get substantial better mileage, around 5 mpg in a smaller car like yours. Thats because that automatic sucks all the power your 4 cylinder takes away. ITs only 1 or 2 mpg on trucks but quite a bit more on a car. With a manual you have alot more direct feeling, you hit the gas and you go, not that mushy feeling with an auto. The same car with a manual and 4 cylinder will be quite a bit quiter than the auto, they rob too much power. As for a suggestion on a car, I would say a mid 90s honda accord or civic, or maybe a acura integra. They are reliable and last forever and parts are cheap.

It is true that cars with manual transmission get better mileage than cars with automatic transmission. They are also better for going down hills and driving in slippery conditions. I prefer to drive a car with manual transmission.

As for advice, I'm sure that you know better what car you would like than me.
