You could probably do a search for the state/county you are in and find more info on this. There are such things as lost/salvaged titles. I think it needs to be gone or a car just sitting for so long however. Good luck

What state are you in? In the state of Ohio you can go thru the BMV and fill out proper paperwork to obtain a title. You need to find out if there are any lein holders and certified letters have to be sent out. If the value of the car is higher than damage or needed repairs you have to pay the state for the value of the car to get the title.

I've heard of abandoned cars, but never abandoned car titles.

actuly if a car has been adandon for a certin period of time you might be able to do a title salavage on it. but I would talk to a attonery to find out what are the legalities of it.
