Paypal at one point was safe for both sellers and buyers, but now they have policies that allow buyers to steal from sellers.

A local buyer who can not pay with cash or a certified check from a local bank that you can verify before giving them the title is one to beware of. You could easily end up losing your car and money. Most likely they have hacked into a paypal account and want to use someone else's money to get your car.

Paypal is trustworthy. I suspect your buyer might not be.

Lots of scammers purport to be using paypal but are not.

Sell your car in person for cash. Very few legit buyers cant pay you that way.

Scammers use links that LOOK like paypal but are not.

Ask the person, WHY can you only pay with paypal ?

There is about a 3% fee for accepting paypal even if its legit.

So,for most big ticket items, sellers don't accept paypal for anything but a deposit or a small portion of the purchase price.

Bottom line is paypal is only as trustworthy as the other person. If he is a scammer, you could get scammed.

Now, I buy stuff off ebay all the time and pay via paypal. I use links on the actual ebay site to take me there so I know its legit.

Your guy contacted you via craigslist. He will probably want to pretend to pay you over & above your asking price without ever seeing the car and then ask you to send a check for the excess.

For example, your car is $3500, he sends you $6000 and tells you that you can keep an extra $500, just send him a $2000 check.

Oh and he never sees or comes after the car. He just keeps the $200 and his $6000 payment wasn't real or gets reversed.

Paypal is very trustworthy- BUT you must see a email FROM them showing you received the payment into your Paypal account BEFORE you transfer the item/vehicle/etc. Go to Paypal and check them out. I've used them frequently for over 5 years without fail or problem. Craigslist is the one NOT to trust! Tell your buyer, paypal reciept of payment first, then title and keys!

PayPal exists to protect peoples Information and prevent them getting scammed. It follows international safety standards and is used by millions, so if it wasn't safe, it would have been closed down by now. Always check when opening Paypal that you have the 'secure' Lock symbol at the bottom left corner of your page as this is a sign that you are safe and on the correct URL.

no. paypal is very secure, but if someone tries to buy your car off of craigslist, and can only "pay" through paypal, thats a red flag

probably a scammer...but ask to meet in person for them to check it out...
