Question:
Which is a Better Car?

Hi, I'm a senior in high soon to get a car. I'm deciding to whether to get an Audi A4 2.0 or Infiniti G37x (both need AWD, I live in a cold area). I know it's a really nice car for a high school student but I just got accepted into an Ivy-League University so my parents said I earned it. Both cars would be at around the same price (42,000-ish) so that is not an issue. The Infiniti is slightly cheaper but Audi makes up for it in fuel economy.

The Audi A4 would have the prestige package and the Infiniti G37 would have the premium and navigation package. Both cars have around the same features though the Infiniti does have a sliding sunroof (Audi only tilts), adaptive cruise control, and scratch shield paint. They both have their own pros and cons I just don't know which one to choose.

The Audi in my opinion definitely looks better inside and outside. The exterior is really sexy and the interior is very nice with the MMI system and 14 speaker sound system versus Infiniti's 10 speakers (though I did feel the interior a bit too plasticky). It also has more space, and is slightly more fuel-efficient.

The Infiniti on the other hand has over 110 more horsepower and a V6 engine along with a 7 speed auto transmission. Performance is definitely better with the Infiniti though the Audi 2.0 does have good cornering and acceleration (I hear). I tested both of these cars but I couldn't really do any experimentation with my parents sitting next to me. I don't plan to drive like a maniac but I would like to do some fast cornering and what not on empty roads. For a beginner like me, I would imagine both cars would satisfy any performance I want. But I will keep this car for at least 3-4 years, so later on I probably would want higher performance. The Infiniti's interior and exterior isn't as nice but I still like it. It also has a couple more features. Lastly, it is reliable. It is Japanese and has a reputation of being very reliable, while I hear Audi reliability isn't that good.

Another big concern of mine is looking too showoffy in my school parking lot. Most of the kids in my school drive hand-me-downs, though there are a few BMW's and one Range Rover Sport. Those cars have never been keyed up but my friend who has an Audi A5 got his car keyed last year. The A4 isn't as nice looking as the A5 but it still stands out a lot and I am afraid of someone scratching it. There are a lot of Infiniti's in my town so I think that has a less chance of being keyed than the A4. There are a few losers in my school who think any kid with a nice car should get their car keyed, but I try to avoid them and are not friends nor enemies with them.

I was wondering if anyone has a suggestion about which car I should get. I'm more concerned about looking showoffy and reliability than anything because I have done extensive research about the cars and what they offer. If anyone has owned/driven these cars or has any opinion about which one is better for me, please let me know. Thanks a lot.

Looks like you've done a lot of research. Both cars are very nice and it will come down to your personal preference. See which car you like to drive better, which seats are more comfortable, how easy (or difficult) to operate all the center stack controls like radio, air, heating, NAV (it it's equipped), etc...

Case for AUDI A4:

Great styling, german engineering, precision, fuel economy

Case for Infinity G37x:

Proven reliability, good handling in the winter, styling (not as nice as Audi though), interior materials

My buddy has G37 and he had a G35 prior to that and he loves them. When I was looking for a car, I compared Audi A4, Infinity G37, BMW 3 series, and Mercedes C class. I went with BMW because no other car performed as precise and tight as BMW. Audi would have been my 2nd choice, then Infinity.

In your case, why are you not considering a BMW 3 series? If you are planning to keep the car for about 4 years, BMW has FREE maintenance program where all your oil changes and other maintenance work won't cost you a penny. It also has great styling and has been #1 car on Car and Drivers list for the last 18 years. If your parents are spending $42K for a car, definitely look into BMW.

Between Audi and Infinity, I would go with Audi due to precision, styling, and fuel economy. Get Infinity only if you plan to keep it for over 10 years. Japanese cars typically are very boring and I bet you'll quickly get tired of them.

Good Luck

Even Though im an Audi type of guy.

I would go with the g37 over the a4.

I only say that because I dont like the engine on the a4, I think they made it a little slow.

If you want a good comparison with the audi.

The other guy answered the s4, yes, that's a good comparison.

If you know how to drive manual, I would spend a little more and get the S5. Now the s5 is a beast waiting to be unleashed(cheesy) yet true.

I met someone with it, you will be running the parking lot.

Im also a highschool student and people dont key cars here because they have enough respect, but if your worried about that, make sure you park away from everyone else, like in a corner or something. Its what I do, because people can be careless and hit your car when opening their door.

First of all, you have to define an "American" car. It looks as though your mom wants to "buy American" so that she keeps car manufacturing jobs in the US, or keeps American car companies in business. The first reason is altruistic and there are a lot of good cars built by Americans to choose from. The second reason is short-sighted and rewards bad behavior. If it's for the first reason, you should know that determining what is an "American" car by that definition is a research project. Does she think a car made in Canada or Mexico is an "American" car? The government labeling system does. The "Monroney Sticker" -- the window sticker required by law to be affixed to the window of every new car -- will tell you what the "domestic content" of the car is, but "domestic" includes Canada and Mexico. The point of final assembly will be listed on the door frame label. I don't know if it's still true, but the car with the most "American" content for a long time was a Honda Civic. Most Hondas and Toyotas are made in the US using American labor. Some cars with "American" car company labels are really Korean. Volvo is owned by Ford, who are also part owner of Mazda. Saab is owned by GM, and one of its models is a reworked and relabeled Subaru. Many Saturns are basically relabeled German Opels. If she wants a "good" car made in the US by an American company, her best bets are the Ford Fusion and Taurus, and their Mercury Milan and Sable counterparts. Both have scored high in safety, are good performers, and have been as reliable as the well-regarded Toyotas they compete with. In the "Cross-over" category, the Buick Enclave has gotten rave reviews and Buicks are the most reliable American-labeled, American-built cars. Good luck. I trust she will find a good car that fits her definition, and it will serve her well. Good motoring!
