Can dealerships add an extended warranty to a car that's somewhat old as long as the mileage is low? (About 10 years old). I was looking at a 2004 with 45,000 miles on it but I definitely wanted to add a warranty if possible

It would not be a dealership giving the warranty themselves it would be through a secondary company...which you can look those up yourself online.

Being older, the warranty would likely cost more since they expect more things to go wrong with the car. It would likely not be worth it. My wife bought an extended warranty on the car she bought when I was deployed. It was a 2009 car that she bought in 2010 from CarMax.

A lot of things are not covered by the extended warranty and they tried to deny things that were supposed to be covered...which required fighting a bit with the help of the mechanics. The warranty is expiring in a few weeks, and the car is in the shop right now. We will just break even on the cost of the warranty with the cost of the repairs.

Things could have worked out better or worse, but that is the chance you take.

Never buy a warranty from a dealer. If you absolutely think you need a warranty, buy it directly from a provider. WarrantyDirect.com is one company I know of that seems to have a good reputation. However, when you buy such a warranty, you need to read closely at what it covers and what it doesn't cover. Many times, you'll find that not much of any importance is covered.

A better plan is to simply put money aside (the same money you would have paid for a warranty) into your own bank account and use it for ANY repair you might need. And guess who gets to keep the money if you never have to use it -- you -- not some warranty company.

A warranty on a car 11 years old? Surely you jest.

Yes, but it won't come from the manufacturer, it usually comes from an insurance company. And beware, it's incredibly hard to collect any money from these warranties, to get them to pay out if anything goes wrong with your car.

the 10 year old car can have an extended warranty BUT it will never be honored == the dealer just puts the money in their bank and you get nothing --- DO NOT waste your money on that dealership or the warranty ..........................

THEY ARE rip offs. But dealers LOVE to sell them. 60%+ profit.
