Alright, so I found these two cars in my area and both have good deals on them. So I found a 2013 chevy volt that's fully loaded with everything for $18,000 and a Mitsubishi Mirage fully loaded with everything for $11,000.

The Volt has the 40 mile electric range and when you run out of electricity, the gas generator kicks in. when on gas, you get 35 city and 40 highway mpg. Going to work and back is 17 miles for me round trp, 8.5 miles one way. I'd hardly ever use gas with the volt (with the exception of long trips once in a while.)

The Mirage however gets 37 city and 44 highway mpg but it's just gas powered. The mirage is $7,000 cheaper.

I would have to use slightly more gas with the Mirage.

Is the $7,000 more worth getting the volt over the mirage?

Assuming that I drove 1,250 miles a month and depending on how often I would be able to charge the volt during those driving times and according to Edmund, the volt would cost me $54/month in fuel (and electricity that I use combined) whereas the mirage will cost me $94/month in fuel.

Both cars however are a lot more efficient than my current car. I pay about $200 to $250/month in gas with my current car.

Would it be worth me paying an extra $40/month long term to save $7,000 in the short term?

Now I do plan on keeping the vehicle long term and I know that the volt is a really good car but I don't know about the mirage. I also have a wife and kid.

Go drive a Mirage and see if you really want one. It's a good idea on paper, but the car is cramped, uncomfortable and it can't get out of it's own way.

I would pick the Volt by a long shot.

I have a 5 speed Mirage DE and have averaged 49 MPG since I bought it 5 months ago. The suspension is way too soft for my tastes, but there's aftermarket support to fix that.

if you need economy buy a diesel also check the replacement cost of a volt battery , $7000 is a lot of gas and your trip isn't long enough to comepensate
